Stefan Borson was asked to comment by Legal Business on how a dispute between UEFA and Fifa could play out

Fifa president Gianni Infantino’s proposal to sell stakes in a new commercial entity, Fifa Forward Enterprise, which would have held rights to World Cup-related assets, sparked significant backlash from European football body UEFA. According to reporting from Legal Business, UEFA had considered legal action and engaged US counsel, though Fifa has since shelved the proposal following widespread criticism. Legal commentators weighed in on the likely fallout, including our Head of Sport, Stefan Borson, who offered his view on how the dispute is likely to be resolved:

‘The likelihood is that this will be resolved by commercial and media pressure, rather than legal. It will be hard for Infantino to survive if the media noise continues,’ said Stefan. ‘JPMorgan has also had bad publicity, but they do not seem to have done anything wrong. They have engaged with a major client in good faith, and successfully raised the money,’ he added. ‘But US lawyers can be creative, and there is some talk of UEFA alleging the proposal undervalued FFE.’
