Ryan Carthew has more than 20 years’ experience as an employment lawyer in Australia and the United Kingdom. Previously a Partner at Dentons UKME and Salans UK, Ryan is highly regarded as an expert on all aspects of contentious and non-contentious employment law.

A tenacious advocate and an expert in strategic planning and execution, Ryan specialises in advising on large-scale projects, including complex litigation, internal and statutory investigations, redundancy processes and restructuring projects.
He has extensive experience in advising on employment and trade union issues relating to mergers, acquisitions and disposals. He has several years’ experience in coordinating employment advice on global deals across multiple jurisdictions.
Ryan has particular expertise in advising on the resolution of complex boardroom and shareholder disputes.
The majority of Ryan’s clients are employers in the Financial Services sector, but he has advised clients across a broad range of industries and sectors. He has successfully represented a significant number of senior executives, assisting them in resolving disputes with their employers and former employers.
Examples of matters on which he has advised include:
- Applying for and securing ex-parte interim injunctions and Anton Pillar orders from the High Court for a film industry client against former employees and contractors who had unlawfully procured highly confidential proprietary content, and co-ordinating the successful recovery and securing of that content.
- Co-ordinating global employment advice across multiple jurisdictions to a major Private Equity client on the terms of the client’s acquisition of a major division of IBM and overseeing the migration of the divisions non-US global workforce to the acquiring client’s corporate structure.
- Advising British Steel and Liberty Steel on establishing global corporate and operational structures for their respective acquisition of separate divisions of Tata Steel’s UK business and overseeing the migration of employees to the acquiring businesses.
- Advising a major logistics business on the successful defence in the High Court of a claim by sellers of an acquired business for contractual earn-out payments in circumstances where the client alleged breaches by the sellers of the terms of the sale agreement.
- Advising a major Chinese Bank on formulating and executing a plan for the consultation of affected employees regarding the closure of the client’s defined benefit pension scheme to future accruals.
- Advising a major energy business on the investigation of serious allegations of sexual harassment by a former employer against a senior executive of the Business.
- Securing a rare Interim Employment Order from the Employment Tribunal for a former Finance Director of an electronic payments business who was alleging he had been dismissed and subjected to detriment for making protected public interest disclosures under Public Interest Disclosure (whistleblowing) legislation.
