Riya is an articulate and commercial solicitor with experience in both dispute resolution and corporate practice. Over the years, she has developed a keen interest in all aspects of commercial work including drafting pre-action letters, pleadings and corporate agreements.
Riya qualified in August 2020. Since then, she continued her practice at a boutique law firm in Mayfair before moving in-house for a sustainability tech start up based in Singapore. She has been the lead associate acting on complex transactions which has helped develop her technical and commercial skillset and she continues to provide support as general counsel.
Having managed several commercial retainers for high net worth individuals, investment funds and international conglomerates, her approach with all matters is to balance pragmatism and commitment to ensure a good client experience irrespective of the magnitude of their issues. Riya prides herself on her friendly but sensible approach to help achieve the best results for clients.
Notable Cases
- Assisted in a shareholder dispute between a high net worth family and their group of companies. Successfully defended an application to remove the nominated arbitrator due to alleged impartiality. Responsible for drafting interparty correspondence, taking instructions and negotiating the terms of settlement prior to drafting the written agreement formalising the same.
- Acted for a minority shareholder and ex-CFO in a $50m claim against an international financial institution for a breach of contract claim.
- Lead solicitor when acting for a defendant in an $8.9m ICC Arbitration relating to breach of the terms and conditions of a forex trading website. Oversaw document review, drafted defence and counterclaim as well as made representations at the Case Management Conference. Lead on case strategy and liaising with client to best achieve its objectives.
- Sole associate involved in an ICC Arbitration relating to a breach of contract regarding the provision of security services in Nigeria. Drafted pleadings and liaised with key directors to draft witness statements. Made oral representations at the Case Management Conference and obtained a successful judgement.
- Lead solicitor for a claimant in an intellectual property dispute regarding software copyright infringement by a third-party consultant. Successfully obtained an injunction order in November 2021.
- Sole associate in a High Court judicial review case involving challenging the decision to grant a search warrant to seize a high value artefact with Turkish cultural heritage. Liaised with counsel, advised the client on an ongoing basis and prepared all Court documentation including bundles and applications.
Notable Transactions
- Assisted a dental company in obtaining global trademarks for various products and provided guidance on the UK patent application process, which also involved advising on design and product development to ensure these met the legal registration criteria.
- Key associate responsible for managing a team to undertake legal due diligence on the acquisition of a UK based plastic manufacturing entity by an international conglomerate looking to achieve vertical integration in the supply chain. Main responsibilities included document analysis, liaising with the financial department and producing a report to summarise the investigation which allowed the client to understand the transactional benefits and risks.
