What we say about Gordon
After a spell as a British Army officer (which included UN peace-keeping in Cyprus), Gordon qualified as a barrister and then also as a solicitor in 1989. He first worked at Olswang and Eversheds, then in-house at the Serious Fraud Office (1995 – 1997) and subsequently as a partner in other London firms, most recently as head of litigation at Monro Wright & Wasbrough LLP. In 2000 he was trained by CEDR and became an accredited mediator. He joined McCarthy Denning in 2017.
Gordon has acted for large multinationals, insurers, banks, regulatory authorities, prosecution agencies, liquidators, trustees in bankruptcy, receivers, high net worth individuals, small and medium businesses and professionals; with instructions coming to him from the UK, the USA, South America, Russia, South Korea, Cambodia, the Middle East, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Cyprus, Italy and Spain. The common factor is always complexity.
In 2022 Gordon led a legal team that obtained a landmark victory for a client in an extremely complex shareholders’ dispute in which unfair prejudice and other claims were proven. The Petition for wrongdoing since 2010 in one of the leading UK pharmaceutical industry companies was fully vindicated. McCarthy Denning CEO Warren Wooldridge has commented: “This is a major win in a hard-fought case … This case shows the depth and breadth of our expertise in shareholder disputes and the effectiveness of our teams in long and complex litigation.” The case dealt with almost 8 years of oppressive conduct and included 8 Defendants. It resulted in a trial of over 5 weeks. This reflected the volume of documents and the complexities and difficulties of the case, as acknowledged by the Judge.
Gordon also deals often with cases requiring cultural sensitivities. Drawing upon: his experience in living for extended periods abroad, being bilingual in German and with some Spanish and French, his familiarity with Russian business, his understanding of Islam and his 17-year practice of mediation, he has a particular interest in cases that span different human perspectives.
