McCarthy Denning, has partnered with the University of Warwick to launch a scholarship programme to support aspiring law students. The first three recipients, who are starting their legal degrees at Warwick in autumn 2017, will each benefit from an award for the duration of their four-year undergraduate courses. McCarthy Denning will also provide them with additional support including mentoring and work experience opportunities.
The programme was mentioned by Edward Fennell in the Law Diary under the heading ‘Giving Back’ in The Times today. Edward highlighted McCarthy Denning’s “next generation law firm” credentials and noted that as a firm recuiting only experienced lawyers it benefits from firms which train lawyers, giving McCarthy Denning the opportunity to “give back”.

McCarthy Denning is seeking to redefine the business of law through its business model and the people it attracts. The firm operates as a full-service, international law firm with an innovative model that allows
lawyers with typically ten years’ experience to work in a flat structure, utilising agile working methodologies and flexible fee arrangements to provide a truly client-centric approach. As the law firm recruits only experienced lawyers, the McCarthy Denning Scholarship Programme provides an opportunity for the firm to give back to the legal profession. The means-tested scholarships will be initially offered to three students addressing the challenges of social mobility and access to education which are significant issues for the legal sector.
Established in 1969, and now with over 1,000 students and 70 full-time staff, the University of Warwick School of Law has evolved into one of the leading law schools in the UK. Warwick Law School is ranked 6th out of 67 Law Departments for its Research Environment and 10th overall. This year, across its faculties, the University of Warwick will support 68 first-year students – the highest number of scholarships the University has ever awarded.
Richard Beresford, McCarthy Denning Chairman and co-founder, and a Warwick alumni, commented:
“The McCarthy Denning Scholarship Programme is our way to give back to the legal community and invest in the lawyers of tomorrow. As a law firm with a redefined model that offers only senior-level advice, we feel committed to contributing to the development of the legal profession at its very root by investing in aspiring law students who without our support might not have been able to take up the opportunity of studying at a leading law school.”
The McCarthy Denning Scholarship Programme was launched on 28 March 2017 at Warwick’s annual scholarship event which this year was held at Warwick Business School’s base at the Shard. The event was hosted by the Vice Chancellor and President of the University of Warwick, Stuart Croft, and brought together scholars and donors to Warwick’s sector leading scholarship programmes as well as senior members of the alumni community.
